"The AI You Didn't Hire: Ethics, Accountability, and the Rise of Invisible AI in Legal Practice"
Artificial intelligence is no longer something legal professionals necessarily choose to use. Increasingly, AI is being embedded into the technology already surrounding legal work, including research platforms, eDiscovery tools, document management systems, email, contract platforms, case management software, and other everyday applications. That creates a new ethical challenge: What happens when the technology changes, but our ethical responsibilities do not?
The one-hour ethics MCLE moves beyond the familiar conversation about ChatGPT, hallucinations, and prompt-writing to examine the emerging risk of "Invisible AI." This presentation will challenge legal professionals to think beyond whether they intentionally "use AI" and toward a more important question: Do we understand where AI is operating within our legal workflows, what it is doing, and who remains responsible when something goes wrong?

Tracey N. Perkins, MBA is a Senior Litigation Paralegal, Founder and Chief Strategist of the ParaLeader Institute, and a legal educator with more than 20 years of experience spanning litigation, legal operations, recruiting, and higher education. She serves as a adjunct professor and paralegal instructor at the University of California, Irvine Division of Continuing Education, College of the Canyons, and Santa Ana College. Tracey is passionate about helping paralegals move beyond task execution to become influential strategic partners and recognized leaders within their organizations.
